Market report Agar Agar May 2015

The situation concerning supply and prices for Agar Agar has been quite stable in recent weeks and prices remained at a high level.

This was due to strong demand particularly in Asia and not very satisfactory crop yields.

Since last December, the demand for Agar Agar in Indonesia has unexpectedly decreased, despite the typically high demand in this country. Therefore, the prices for raw material came down.

However, the situation may change for the Ramadan, when less quantities coming onto the market and the demand during this period increases again.

In China, the crop yields were lower than expected due to weather conditions, but the demand is declining slightly.
The harvest in China is to be completed by July. At that time, the large purchases are made, which can lead to price increases.

Chile reports a strong demand for raw material, which is, however, also at high prices due to the very good quality. Until the next harvest in December we don’t expect price changes.

Morocco is priced very high and the quantities offered are very limited. We observe significant delays in delivery in some cases. This concerns the Gelidium quality only.

There is a bottleneck in the quick soluble quality (QSA) and with ultra low gel strength Agar Agar, mainly from Morocco. We are able to supply these special qualities within short delivery times.
Please contact us for your inquiries.

For long-term coverage, we recommend to wait. However, the uncertainty about the exchange rate Euro versus US Dollar remains. The prices could be affected with a weak euro.

Market report Guar gum May 2015

The price development of Guar was varying a lot over the last weeks.

In our last report we had indicated that prices will increase again. During the last four weeks, the prices have actually increased by about 30 %. This was quite surprising, because of the overall demand, the capacities in India and the amounts of material in stock.

Russia’s demand for the oil sector is supposed to be strong, the US market for food is apparently also running well. As mentioned before, the market doesn’t offer a lot of raw material at the moment. We suspect that goods are retained by the farmers, because the prices don’t meet their expectations in any way. For this reason, the summer crop will certainly be small. Whether large acreage are provided for harvest in the fall remains questionable. The farmers have alternatives to guar, where they can currently achieve better rates.

The Indian government has cancelled export subsidies for guar gum producers, which have been granted for many years. This naturally leads to immediate price increases.

We do not expect significant discounts in the next months. Our recommendation a few weeks ago was to cover at least the medium-term needs. From a today´s point of view this was the right decision.

Currently, we are cautious with purchases, since we cannot judge further development and activities of speculators and stock keepers.

An important factor for the upcoming weeks will be the monsoon rains. First forecasts show less rain falls than required but governmental institutions expect rain level of approx. 93-95 %. If this is going to happen we don´t think this will have a negative impact on prices. But weather conditions can change easily in this region.

We will keep you informed.

Market report Alginate May 2015

The prices of alginate (seaweed) have decreased slightly.
However, it is reported that the quality of currently arriving seaweeds is not good. Therefore raw material of current harvest is used for blends with raw material from last crop.

Prices in Europe are affected by the exchange rate. Although prices for raw material have decreased, we don’t expect a change of prices in general.

The decisive main crop in Asia will take place in May. A forecast on quantities and qualities cannot be forseen at this point yet.

We will keep you informed.

For short-term needs, we have sufficient quantities in stock.
